Flexline Professional Line Source System

Flexline - Placed Vertically

We selected a few of the most commonly asked questions. We hope that it will suitably help and assist you.

Q How much time does it take to install twelve Flexline cabinets?

R The Flexline units come in a special ATA flight case on wheels. You only need to align together each case, remove all the covers, insert the rigging coupling rods and then pull up the complete rig to the desired position. With a motorized chain block, the complete operation takes only twenty minutes. Each Flexline units automatically snap and lock to the preset angle when pulled up.

Q Is a horizontal dispersion of 120 degrees can be too much in some applications?

R In most cases it is in fact a great advantage. There are only a few things that you need to know to make it work according to your own specific needs. People at VDGroup can be of great assistance in helping you with this matter. Lets take one example: The system has to be installed in an arena of about 5 000 people. You have people located on the floor level and people all around in the balconies. You need to reach with sufficient power pressure the people seated at the far rear balconies while not overloading the near balconies located at 120 degrees. First, by simply lowering the power level that goes to the bottom Flexline units you won't overpower the near people. The top Flexline units will shoot directly to the rear without affecting the near people. Also, one has to remember that the cylindrical dispersion of the Flexline System diminishes the variation of front to rear pressure level. In other words, compare to a conventional system, you need less pressure level at the front to get enough pressure at the rear. To resume, for this application, only two rig of eight Flexline units is sufficient to fully cover the complete arena. No need for side fills.

Q Ribbon drivers have been known as very fragile. Is there any risk in using these components in such a high power system?

R No. With a proper cooling system, a ribbon diaphragm has a great advantage over a dynamic driver. The ribbon to air temperature resistance can be kept very low. It means any temperature increase inside the membrane is rapidly cooled off. Our tests have shown that even at full power level the increase of the ribbon temperature was only 1 degree over the ambient temperature.

Q Why are you using ribbon drivers?

R There are several useful reasons to justify the use of a ribbon driver. 1) It is a perfect isophase line source motor, 2) it has a very wide horizontal dispersion and has a very narrow vertical dispersion, 3) it exhibits no detrimental resonances in its frequency response (See the
waterfall), 4) it is phase linear, 5) it exhibits very low distortion at high power levels. 6) it is reliable and easy to service, 7) it is flat up to 25 kHz, and most of all, 8) it sounds natural.

Q What should I do in cases where I need to cover a very narrow area?

R Simply rig some Flexline units horizontally. Yes, the Flexline System is designed to be played and rigged both ways. You get all the Flexibility you need to suits your own specific needs.

Q How many preset angles can be selected with the Flexline?

R You have 0, 4 and 7 degrees that can be selected.

Q Is the cooling system could be too noisy on some applications?

R No. The Flexline cooling system is very silent. The fan motor is installed inside the cabinet and equipped with a special silencer.

Q What happens if one of the fan motor inside the Flexline stops functioning properly?

R Flexline is equipped with a monitoring system that continuously measure the speed of the ventilating fan. In cases where the fan speed would fall below a critical value, an alarm indicator would light up.

Q What has brought you to select the QSC power light amplifier serie for your demonstration Flexline system?

RThe Flexline System is a compact, high performance, high power (75 000 watts) reliable sound system. The QSC power light amplifiers have similar qualities and tested to match well with the Flexline.

Because of its neutrality, the Flexline needs fast and high bandwidth amplifiers to perform at its best. Nevertheless, a lot of other good power amplifiers are actually available on the market.

Q What is the rear attenuation of the Flexline System?

R You get 40 dB of pressure level attenuation at the rear.
